Identity Project,
(board, paper)
In this project,
students first discussed the concept of "identity", and looked at what "I.D." cards usually contain: basic information about a person. The students were then asked to expand on this concept, and to make an I.D. card that really described their own identity in a personal sense.
Language Project
(board, paper, wood, and other materials)
This project explored pictorial and non-pictorial writing systems. In class, students studied various writing systems of the world, including early Chinese characters, Egyptian hieroglyphs, Mayan glyphs, and so on. Then, working in groups, they were asked to design their own pictorial writing systems, and to write a phrase using their new scheme. Later, they studied non-pictorial writing systems, looking at Roman, Arabic, and other alphabets. Again, they were asked to devise their own systems, and write a phrase using that system. In the class critique, the students discussed the relative efficiency of each writing system, ease of memorization and use, aesthetic appeal and so on.
